'Hot Springs Are Endangered'

The hot water springs of the world-famed Lake Bogoria may soon disappear if destruction of its water catchment area is not curbed, a conservationist has warned.

Maushe Kidundo, a project manager with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) said the lake's uniqueness and beauty may be no more if conservation efforts are not hastened. Kidundo said research had shown that interference in the lake's water catchment area and change of land use had led to the lowering of the water table.

Lake Bogoria is famed for its hot water springs that jet from underground due to intense volcanic activity in the area.

Only last week, Egerton University's Prof Mohamoud Abuod warned that the nearby Lake Baringo would dry up in the next ten years due to destruction of its catchment.

Kidundo said some rivers in the area that used to drain into the lake had changed course to Lake Baringo due to siltation occasioned by flower farming.

Kindudo made the observations on Sunday when he led the visiting WWF Director General, Dr Claude Martin, in a tour of the lake.

Martin who is on a four-day tour of the country toured and inspected WWF sponsored projects in Baringo and Koibatek districts.

During the tour, Kidundo also said that apart from obstruction of water, poaching and death of flamingos have remained a threat to the lake, a major tourist attraction.
