Shira Lake & Spa (excerpted from promotional flyer)The numerous objects of ecological and recreative importance are located in the Republic of Khakasia. Mineral water bodies are among the most significant ones. The estimated number of permanent natural mineral lakes, with water plane area being more than 10 ha, exceeds 110. Twelve large lakes, each having water plane area over 1 square kilometer: Bele, Shira, Vlasyevo, Uchum, Tagarskoye, Ulukh-Kol, Chernoye, Gorkoye, Altaiskoye, Terskoye, Tus and Utichye - are all a part of this diversity. The most famous is the mineral lake of Shira with a well-known Siberian spa. In 1997 the spa, Shira Lake, incorporated into the system of the resorts of Russia and having the Republican stutus, will meet its centenary. The administrative city centers of the Republic of Khakasia - Abakan (distance from the spa - 120 km) and of Krasnoyarsk region - Krasnoyarsk (340 km) are connected with the resort by roads, railway, and air communication. Basic characteristics of the lake system: sunny days per summer (June-August) - 46-52. Altitude above the sea level - 354 m. Length - 9 km, width - 5 km; average depth - 11m, maximum depth - 21 m. Water formula:alkalescent, sulphate-chloride-sodium-potassic. Mineralization - 20-3- g/l. pH=8.9-9.2. The spa provides range of health and natural medical treatments. The prime natural treatment factors are: mineral water (similar to the Btalin mineral water of the Caucasis), silt mud and the steppe climate. Complete course of treatment - 24 days; accommodation - 1-2 people rooms; the dietary menu is provided. A number of chronic diseases of adults and children are indicated for cure at this resort, them being such as: diseases of gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas; polyarthritis, nerve root syndrome, osteochondrosis; gynecological diseases and the disorders in man's urinogenital sphere; skin diseases; glaucoma and diabetes mellitus.
