Salt lake and Environmental change; Biodiversity in salt lakes; Luminescence dating of salt lake deposits;

Over the last 10 years, I have worked in the geochemistry of freshwater, seawater, brines and solid precipitates formed by evaporation processes. My major contributions to research in geochemistry can be divided into three broad fields: Palaeoenvironmental interpretations. My research into Cenozoic evaporite basins has updated our knowledge on evaporite deposits and their genesis. This research has been used in understanding the chemistry of the ocean in past geological times. Use of isotopic tools for water-management. In particular the use of 14C, 3H, 87Sr/86Sr and H2O-stable isotopes. Some research areas include: Sydney Basin (Australia) (mostly groundwater), Gulf of Carpentaria (Australia) and quaternary evaporitic deposits, waterholes along the Cooper Ck (QLD and SA). My research in Cooper region allows classifying waterholes sustainability and ecological value, based on the understanding of their potential connection with shallow groundwater. Development of techniques. My developments with Cryo-SEM-EDS and LA-ICP-MS have allowed precise quantitative micro analysis of fluid inclusions. These microscopic (~20 um3) “time capsules”, trapped during crystal growth allow us to understand evaporation processes and mineral genesis.

My interests are primarily in diagenesis of clastic rocks and geochemistry of formation waters. I recently became interested in the geochemistry (ions and stable isotopes)of clastic sabkha pore waters by trying to interpret early cements in ancient (Permo-Carboniferous) desert sandstones. I began collecting pore waters from modern desert sedimentary environments on weekends here in Saudi Arabia as a hobby, and this ultimately became part of a research project this is on-going. As part of this study I also began sampling modern salt pans and playas in the Kingdom.
